Irazu Volcano
The Irazu Volcano is an active volcano in Costa Rica. Its name originated from the indigenous word for thunder. It is the highest mountain in the country reaching an elevation of 11,260 feet (3432 meters). This site is very popular for tourists because from the peak of the volcano you can see both the pacific and atlantic coasts of Costa Rica. However since the volcano is still active it is still dangerous to live by and visit. One of the volcano’s major eruptions occurred in 1963-65. The volcano produced lots of ash that damaged a small nearby river flooding the city of Cartago this led to major damage to coffee crops. The active volcano creator is pretty deep, around 980 meters down. Irazu volcano currently has a cold wet climate with a short dry season. The national park where the volcano is located is also home to many animals including birds, mammals and reptiles. Such as the Volcano hummingbird and the Costa Rican pygmy owl. For Costa Rica the Irazu volcano is both a great asset and a potentially bad one, whilst it brings in lots of tourists every year it also adds devastating risks if it were to erupt again.
